Natural education assistance, inter-family assistance and welfare dropped to just 400, late in 1978, while net international migration increased to 622,000, up from 548,500 in the previous 12 months.
A total of 13,800 people also came from England and Wales to Scotland or Northern Ireland.

The office for National Statistics said the population increase in England and Wales was the largest since 1948, when it was the only post-World War II achievement and the return of British military personnel serving overseas saw an increase of 1.5 million.
The number of residents in the United Kingdom reached 67.6 million people at the end of 2022. Data for 2023 is not yet available.
Economic Output has not been able to keep up with the increase in population. Based on provisional population figures, gross domestic product per head in 2023 was 0.7% lower than the previous year.
Net migration to the UK hit a record 764,000 in 2022 and fell 10% to 685,000 in 2023, but is more than double the rate in 2015, after the Brexit referendum.
Developing immigration is the main goal of many Britons who chose to join the European Union.

Britain’s Conservative government has previously said it wants to reduce net immigration, and the Prime Minister’s Labour Party is fighting a government campaign to implement it as well by building an economy no less dependent on foreign workers.
Post-Brexit changes to visas sharply reduced the number of EU migrants to the UK, but new work visa regulations provide for an extension of immigration from India, Nigeria and Pakistan, often to meet labour requirements in health and social services.
At the end of last year, the government made arrangements to establish a social service employee consisting of meetings to bring in dependents.
